A New Era Begins: Takeaways from Michigan's 2024 spring game

Before we get to the newsletter, an announcement at the top: The Michigan commemorative National Championship footballs from Nikco Sports that I had a special offer for after Michigan’s title game victory and also gave away to some subscribers through various promotions should be arriving at your homes this week — if they haven’t already. If you’re one of the subscribers that won an autographed ball, those should be landing next month. Thank you for your patience.
I did an unboxing video of the footballs over on Twitter, check that out if you’re interested in seeing how they turned out. As I mention in the video, I’ve got a few extras, so keep your eyes peeled for some more potential giveaways in the coming months as we build up to the 2024 season.
If you missed out on ordering one the first time around, the folks at Nikco Sports said they have a few balls left from the batch of 5,000 limited edition balls. If you want one, I highly suggest acting fast, because there aren’t many remaining. Use this link if you’re interested, and the coupon code BELL should still earn you a discount at checkout.
And now, the newsletter…

Michigan football is back. Better than ever? Well, that’s a pretty tough ask when you’re coming in to the spring on the heels of a storybook 15-0 season that ended with a National Championship. But after more than 100 days of waiting since the Wolverines bested Washington on the game’s grandest stage, we got to see Michigan put on pads and play in something resembling a football game over the weekend.
So … let’s talk about it. I’m not going to pretend like all of Michigan’s offseason questions were answered over the course of a two-hour, nationally televised intrasquad scrimmage. In fact, some new issues have surfaced in the days that have followed the spring game. But we did learn some things over the weekend, and I’m going to outline many of those below.
For free and premium subscribers both, here’s an audio recording of my appearance with WTKA’s Sam Webb and Ira Weintraub on Monday morning, where we discussed our highlights from Saturday’s spring game (with some bonus hoops talk at the end).
For premium subscribers, I have written takeaways below the paywall jump — along with a little NFL Draft content at the bottom, too, in advance of tonight’s draft.
Let’s get to it.
