March has been here for a while now. But March Madness finally arrives today. And if you’re a Michigan basketball fan, that’s the first time March Madness has truly arrived since the 2021-2022 season. It’s been three years and if you’re like me, it’s felt more like three decades. The crazy part is, if you think about where things stood this time last year and how you felt about the outlook of the Michigan basketball program, getting things turned around to championship-level hoops in Year 1 of the Dusty May Era is all the more remarkable.
Since there was a 17-win difference between this season and last season in Ann Arbor (one of the biggest year-over-year changes in the right direction in quite some time in college hoops), 17 felt like a good number to emphasize when putting together my thoughts heading into Michigan’s next toe dip into March Madness waters.
So after the paywall jump, here are my 17 thoughts in advance of Michigan’s late-night matchup with a red-hot UC San Diego team later this evening.
